Hi All,
Just thought we would take the opportunity to welcome you all to this new home for free AFL content. We also thought we would take the chance to let new users in on some basic ground rules and some hints towards how to be an effective user on this site.
The first thing to remember is that aus.sierules.com is a private ratio based site and this means that as a user there are some expectations placed upon you:
1. Your ratio is a reflection of the relative amounts of download and upload data that you take or give on the torrents that you download. In order to maintain the ideal ratio of 1.0 you need to understand that if you download 1 gigabyte of data (about half the average size of an AFL game on this site) you are expected to upload the same amount.
2. It is understood that sometimes it is not possible to upload as much as you download (in fact some would say it is impossible within the bittorrent world) however we have given you some help to achieve a ratio of 1.0. Firstly every new user starts with 2 gigabytes of upload data, secondly for every hour that you seed torrent files (any number) you will receive one bonus point. Bonus points can be accrued and exchanged for upload credit using this link also located at the very top of every page where is says "Bonus:".
3. You are also expected to seed torrents for as long as possible after you have downloaded them, usually this just means leaving your bittorrent client (utorrent, azureus, etc.) open as long as possible and as often as possible. If you do not do this the first and most devestating effect, is that other people will not be able to get the file, the second problem is that your ratio will go down which will end up with you being warned/banned from the site and thirdly you will receive a warning for "hit and running", after 7 warnings of any description you will be permanently banned from the site.
The basic premise for private ratio based sites is that they encourage an atmosphere where people want to share the content with each other and are happy to do so as thanks for having the free content available in the first place. Unfortunately not everyone sees it this way and so we are forced to implement strategies to "force" people to share. It may seem harsh but thats the reality of private ratio based sites. The uploaders of the AFL on fr333dom.com were annoyed that people were downloading and leaving immediately after completion often meaning that they themselves had to do all the uploading. That behaviour will not be tolerated here.
So, have fun with torrents but just keep in mind that by uploading as much as you are downloading, you are helping to make this site as strong as it can be.
Thanks,
aus.sierules staff
